What DJ are you?

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Thomas Krome
Thomas Krome… You are the classic party goer. You take the scene
and the music seriously, and probably are a dj.
Chances are you know more about the scene and
the music than anyone else.

IPods for Anarchists

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

"Must-have" devices seem to instantly lose their charm for me when they’re adopted en masse — even when it comes to the iPod.

So, being a huge music nosher but not wanting to become a black silhouette plugged into the matrix via white wires in my ears, I decided to build my own.

LoveParade rocks San Francisco

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

To the west, tens of thousands were marching in an anti-Iraq war rally. To the east, tens of thousands more were rocking to the beats of the second annual Loveparade San Francisco, a celebration of electronic music in which 24 floats loaded down with hundreds of DJs meandered slowly towards the city’s Civic Center.

It was a good day to be in San Francisco if you were interested in peace or the celebration of good spirit and the love of dance music.

As the Loveparade made its way west on Market, the sidewalks and even the street were jammed with people dancing. I saw colorful costumes everywhere, with people in full-body rabbit suits on one side of the street, and others with giant fish heads on the opposite side. A well-decked out family of three–including a young child with a far better-looking outfit than mine–greeted me smack dab in the middle of the street.

Throughout it all, the DJs played, the riders on the floats rocked out and everyone on board or on the pavement took advantage of the rare opportunity to move freely and safely in the middle of the city’s busiest street.

Numark’s PT01 Portable Turntable

Pt01desert1

iPod, shmipod. How about vinyl on the go: Numark’s PT01 Portable Turntable runs on D batteries, features a line out (no phono pre needed), and while it’s belt-driven, works for light scratching thanks to an included felt slipmat. It’s small and light enough to throw a couple in a suitcase, and at $99, you can buy two for the price of a Nano. But can it work in the desert? DJ Eldorado did his gear review at Burning Man to find out. Verdict: dust and heat were no match for this micro turntable. -P. Kirn

Problems surfacing with iPod Nano screen

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

Some owners of Apple Computer’s new "impossibly small" iPod Nano are starting to wonder if the device is also impossibly delicate.

The most widespread complaint about the otherwise highly-praised device seems to be that the color display screen gets scratched extremely easily. Nano owner Brian Cason posted one of 250-some threads in response to a recent post on Apple’s discussion board about screen scratching.

My IPod for a Random Playlist

Tuesday, September 20th, 2005

With the advent of the iPod, the masses learned just how cool it can be to play huge collections of songs in random sequences. No longer forced to listen passively to an entire CD all the way through — and in the prescribed order — hordes of music lovers flocked to the randomized playlist.

Partygoers listening to the rollicking song "Bitch" from the Rolling Stones’ watershed album Sticky Fingers are no longer force-fed the slow and sappy "I Got the Blues," which immediately follows. Instead, they might be treated to any number of other songs, say, "There’s No Home For You Here" by the White Stripes. That can make a huge difference at parties, where a schmaltzy song can clear the room faster than a keg that’s run dry.
