Gamers Get a Hollywood Makeover

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Halfway through The 40 Year Old Virgin is a thoroughly remarkable scene. It’s got nothing to do with first-time sex, though. No, it’s about gaming: David and Cal, two of the virgin’s twenty-something slacker friends, are sitting in his apartment playing Mortal Kombat: Deception.

What’s so unusual about that? It’s that their behavior is so oddly realistic: They slouch in chairs and stare at the screen with nonchalance and intensity, while a sardonic stream of trash-talk flows between them. "You know how I know that you’re gay? You like Coldplay," David snarks. Cal responds by pulling off a classic Mortal Kombat "fatality" move. "I’m ripping your head off right now," he says coolly. "It’s off. And now — I’m throwing it at your body."

Mob Pirates: Menace or Myth?

Friday, August 19th, 2005

In the latest public relations strike in the war on copyright infringement, the music and film industries are sowing fears that content piracy, like drug trafficking before it, is being taken over by organized crime syndicates. The problem is that the evidence — so far, at least — is lacking.

Star Wars and spyware mixed up in users’ minds - Malware

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Some 11 per cent of the British population are convinced that spyware is "a gadget from Star Wars", according to research published on Thursday. The survey, carried out by NOP and commissioned by security company Blue Coat, appears to highlight a lack of concern in the UK market about spyware, with more than half of those surveyed unaware that spyware is software on a user’s computer that tracks their behaviour and reports it back to a third party. While 33 per cent of adults are concerned about viruses, according to the survey, only eight per cent show any concern for spyware. A third (30 per cent) of adults said they used a spyware checker every day but that percentage drops to only 16 per cent of adults when using their computer for personal use.

Monroe’s Sworn Enema?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Link: E! Online News.

Marilyn Monroe was killed by what she loved: An enema. Such is the conclusion of a former Los Angeles County prosecutor who has long suspected the film goddess was murdered, and has gone public with transcripts of audio recordings he says she made that back up his argument. Excerpts of John W. Miner’s transcripts were published in the Los Angeles Times on Friday, the 43rd anniversary of Monroe’s death. The complete transcripts, minus "the most graphic words and passages," but with their praise of Clark Gable, orgasms and enemas, and their detailing of a one-night stand with Joan Crawford intact, can be found online at LaTimes.com.
